Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose
The Lab Manager is responsible for oversight and support of lower division Biological Sciences undergraduate laboratories, for coordination of laboratory resources and equipment, and for providing support to faculty, lab instructors, and students.
Essential Functions
  • Responsible for managing laboratory equipment and supplies to ensure sufficient resources available for scheduled class or lab.
    • Sets up lab equipment and supplies according to instructor's class syllabus.
    • Coordinates purchases of consumables for teaching and research labs to garner bulk discounts from vendors.
    • Oversees lab equipment and supplies to ensure necessary quantity and availability.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff lab coordinators, as well as lab instructors, to supervise day-to-day operations of undergraduate laboratories and graduate teaching assistants.
  • Provides counsel and guidance for students to support their success with coursework, assists with rescheduling of laboratories or lab practicals when needed, and at times, serves as conduit between student and faculty for explanation, clarification, or problem resolution.
  • Provides unit support to budget oversight, assists with forecasting annual expenditures for assigned labs and courses, monitors assigned expense accounts, provides weekly/monthly updates to faculty and budget manager.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Biological Sciences or related discipline, or must have met the requirements of a Master's degree in Biological Sciences or related discipline by July 1, 2024.
  • One (1) year of experience working in a biology or other life science teaching laboratory.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to manage lab resources (supplies & equipment) efficiently and cost effectively.
  • *Advanced skill in the handling and operation of equipment typically used in biology laboratories (i.e. autoclaves, dishwashers and liquid nitrogen tanks)
  • Demonstrated ability to set goals, manage time and assignments to meet expected business outcomes and deadlines.
  • Exemplifies traits of good judgment, confidentiality, and discretion in communicating with colleagues and students.
  • Ability to foster an environment of respect and inclusiveness with undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Ability to work under pressure, remain calm in stressful situations, and display patience and tolerance.
  • Solid knowledge of lab procedures following established safety guidelines and practices.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, ability to forecast and monitor budgets.
  • Skill in MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Learning Management Systems like Canvas
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work requires frequent periods of standing and walking. Moderate periods of sitting and infrequent periods of bending, stooping, reaching and kneeling. Moderate use of computers with repetitive use of hands and wrists. Exposure to chemical and hazardous waste typical in biological lab. May be requested to lift up to forty (40) lbs.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:

Hiring Range $56,320.00/year We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
