HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Curator of Mammals leads and inspires their team as they look after the wildlife in their care each day. Partnership engagement on long term strategy that works toward sustainable populations with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and other AZA facilities is integral for long term success of species worldwide. The Curator of Mammals is responsible for proper management and care of the mammal population at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. This position reports to the Safari Park Vice President of Wildlife Care.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Leads and inspires the mammal team to ensure their engagement. Duties include hiring, training and development, succession planning, and performance management.
  • Partners with wildlife care team, wildlife health team, internal stakeholders, AZA and other organizations on species related tasks and strategies such as breeding, studbooks, TAGs, population management, and conservation projects.
  • Ensures SDZWA is compliant with all legal requirements regarding domestic and international movement of wildlife including partnering with the Safari Park and other partners and agencies on wildlife welfare issues.
  • Collaborates with the architecture and operations team on habitat design always considering our wildlife's opportunity to thrive and flourish.
  • Provides complex interpretation of policies and procedures with the wildlife care team, zoo leadership, and other stakeholders.
  • Exercises fiscal accountability and responsibility for departmental budget.
  • Ensures mammal care operations are in compliance with established protocols, professional standards, and government regulations.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
This position will join the existing curatorial team as an Ambassador, Animal Behavior Teams (Explorers, Discoveries, Connection) and The Elephant team at the Safari Park as well as support all of Wildlife Care in operant conditioning. Our current strategic plan supports expanding behavioral husbandry and our wildlife participating in their healthcare. We are looking for a candidate who has several years of AZA experience. A strong working knowledge of current behavioral husbandry skills is preferred, along with a track record of successful mentoring of Wildlife Care Specialists and empowering leaders to implement goals of behavioral programs. Experience managing ambassador animals and associated programming is preferred. Our behavioral conditioning program (BCP) is growing and needs an innovative leader focused on animal welfare, safety and guest experience. The successful candidate will have a collaborative work style, be open-minded, and focused on leadership and bringing out the best in others.
 
JOB EXPERIENCE
  • 7+ Years experience in responsible zoo/animal management and habitat development
  • Previous curatorial experience
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's Degree in biological or natural sciences or a related field Or
  • Equivalent specialized training with mammals
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
  • Strong working knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act and mammal conservation landscape.
  • Strong working knowledge of mammal population, welfare and emergency protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present to large audiences.
  • Able to operate moderately complex computer software programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead highly effective, diverse teams.
  • Able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
