Job Description

The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health related problems where nonhuman primates are the animal models of choice. In addition to its major efforts in research, the Primate Center is also committed to its mission of teaching and service. The role of this position is to provide medical and technical support to veterinary staff and CNPRC investigators in Primate Medicine. Employee may be required to work with animals/tissue infected with biohazardous agents such HIV/SIV virus, measles virus, and others.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, provide mechanical support to the Outdoor Colony (North & South areas) and Indoor Colony in performing repair and maintenance tasks to CNPRC animal rooms, facilities, equipment, and grounds.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Perform diversified tasks that require squatting, kneeling, bending, stooping, or standing.
  • Lift and move equipment/building materials weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity to repair or build parts or devices, and systems using a wide array of both hand and power tools. Solder, assemble cages.
  • Climb ladders and install or service equipment in close quarters. - Mobility to work on uneven ground.
  • Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including gowns, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves, and head covers.
  • Occasionally work in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present where personal protective clothing is required.
  • Work outdoors daily throughout the year, including rain, warmer temperatures, or cold weather that is consistent with Northern California Climate.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Measles vaccination or proof of illness required. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Work indoors/outdoors regardless of weather conditions.
  • Position may, at times, require employee to work in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Required to wear protective clothing in circumstances that require personal protection from infectious diseases and animals.
  • Work irregular hours (early mornings, early evening, and/or weekends, as needed). Work occasional overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • California National Primate Research Center employees are directly or indirectly engaged in the performance of work on Federal or State contracts and grants as well as periodically come into contact with controlled substances; and are expected to abide by the UC Policy on Substance Abuse, the Federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, and the State Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1990.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience operating a variety of shop and hand tools including table saw, chop saw, band saw, grinder, lathe, drill press, drill, file hammer, pliers, screwdriver, etc.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Knowledge of plumbing, welding, soldering, wood frame construction, and metal fabrication techniques, plumbing, electrical, and concrete construction.
  • Skills to organize shop and equipment. Skills to maintain records.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Experience repairing cages and constructing or modifying animal care aids.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with supervisor, co-workers, and staff.
