Position Summary:

The Claire Trevor School of the Arts (CTSA), established in 1965, is a national leader in training emerging artists and performers, delivering a superb developmental experience that combines exceptional artistic training with a top-ranked liberal arts education. It is home to highly ranked departments of Art, Dance, Drama and Music. The Experimental Media Performance Lab (xMPL) is a flexible black box theatre that is used by faculty and students in all four CTSA departments to present innovative performances and exhibitions combining elements of multiple art forms, with enhanced support for video projection, spatialized audio, interactivity and computer networking. Reporting to the CTSA Production Manager, the Theater Tech Specialist assists faculty, students, staff and guest artists to successfully produce all xMPL events; coordinates with production teams from across CTSA to solve technical issues related to lighting, audio, video and other technical needs; manages schedules for performances, exhibitions and other events in the xMPL space; and oversees event set-up and strike. The Theater Tech Specialist also manages an evolving set of smaller technology spaces related to the xMPL, including a performance capture studio and a digital fabrication facility, and establishes and reconciles all budgets for the xMPL and related spaces in coordination with the CTSA Production Manager.

Responsible for all activities associated with multiple / comprehensive technical aspects of theater productions, including procedures and administering / monitoring budgetary expenditures consistent with budgetary allocations, and training of staff / students. May be responsible for maintenance of theater venues, storage, including facilities and stage equipment, tools and materials, and establishing and ensuring implementation of operational procedures for all users within the facilities.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $34.77 - $40.28 (Hourly Rate). The Full Salary Range for the salary grade this position is assigned to is $29.26 - $51.29 (Hourly Rate).

Required:

Experience working in an educational environment.

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Mastery level knowledge in multiple technical theater production areas such as lighting, sound, video, costumes, hair / make-up, properties, scenery, scenic treatment, etc. Thorough knowledge / skills in all aspects of budget administration. Thorough verbal and interpersonal communication skills to communicate complex instructions and information to disparate constituencies. Thorough problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills. Thorough organizational skills. Candidate must be proficient in multiple areas of theater technology such as lighting, sound, projection, rigging. Specialized knowledge in one or more advanced areas such as computer-controlled lighting and sound, real-time video, telematic performance and custom programmed components would be an asset. Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships, and to interact diplomatically with faculty, staff, students, and the public. Demonstrated skill to communicate in a clear and courteous manner, using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain and convey information both orally and in writing. Ability to train students and casual employees as needed in the operation of lighting/audio and other technical equipment within the school. Working knowledge of production and technical aspects of theater: lighting, audio, costuming, projection, effects, props, and scenery. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Skills to organize work flow and delegate responsibility. Ability to work in a fast-paced performance environment. Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment. Ability to set priorities and organize work to meet multiple deadlines. Experience in technical direction and direct support of performances, including audio and video documentation of events. Proven ability to follow both oral and written instructions with only general direction or minimal supervision. Superior time management skills. Computer literacy to include knowledge of word-processing, spreadsheet, and calendaring programs.

Preferred:

Thorough working knowledge of University and collective bargaining policies, practices, rules, regulations, etc., including safety rules and regulations. Experience working in a black-box theatre Demonstrated ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction/instruction. Knowledge of standard safety procedures as outlined by university and OSHA guidelines. Knowledge of standard theatrical software applications such as QLab, Vectorworks/AutoCAD, Lightwright and/or Pro Tools
