Summary

This position is open to our Los Angeles, Century City, Palo Alto, and San Francisco offices.

Reporting to the Chief Diversity Officer, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Director is located in California and is responsible for the development and implementation of programs and policies that promote the Firm's overall diversity, equity, and inclusion goals and the specific goals of the Firm's Diversity & Inclusion Committee, Sidley Women, and the Firm's affinity groups (the Firm's affinity groups, together, with the DEI Committee, and SW, the "Diversity Infrastructure"). Working with the Chief Diversity Officer and the team of DEI professionals, and in coordination with the leaders of the Firm's Diversity Infrastructure , the DEI Director will also interact with the Firm's diverse lawyers, which includes women, minority/ethnic minority, LGBTQ+, and disabled lawyers, firm leadership, as well as identified strategic partners such as Marketing, Strategic Planning, Human Resources, Event Planning, Wellness, Learning & Development, and Legal Recruiting departments. The Firm's global DEI Team works in a collegial manner to advance the Firm's Overall DEI Goals and implement, create and evolve industry-wide best practices, and to support the Firm, diverse communities within the Firm, and individual lawyers and members of professional staff.

Duties and Responsibilities
    Engage with and support the Firm's people, culture, and DEI mission in all California (Century City, Los Angeles, Palo Alto, and San Francisco) and proximate offices.
  • Specifically support the firm's DEI Committees, affinity groups, and Sidley Women committees located in California and proximate offices.
  • Have a deep knowledge of the programming offered by national and local DEI thought leaders and the goals and objectives of law firm and corporate DEI programming.
  • Work collaboratively with the firm's Diversity Infrastructure to develop bespoke DEI related programming.
  • Provide leadership to develop standardized workflows, policies, and processes to facilitate the efficiency of the DEI programming processes.
  • Lead the creation, development, and implementation of metrics and tracking tools that measure the impact of the DEI programming.
  • Lead the creation, development, and implementation of a budget that sets and tracks DEI programming spend and be responsible for complying with the firm's processes for submitting invoices for the provision of services and goods for DEI programming to Accounting.
  • Analyze and negotiate all contracts related to DEI programming.
  • Initiate, plan, and deliver all DEI related programming in the United States, including retreats. This responsibility will require extensive collaboration with the DEI Team, the Diversity Infrastructure, and the Strategic Partners.
  • Provide DEI programming for the firm, clients, and alums based on global observances, as well as related local events.
  • Initiate, plan, and deliver DEI related programming for professional staff.
  • Collaborate with Organizational Communications and Marketing Department to develop newsletters, brochures and other materials to promote the Firm's diversity, equity and inclusion-related objectives, initiatives, programming, and events.
  • Hire, train, and develop direct reports, providing performance feedback and annual performance reviews.
  • Travel as required approximately 40% of time and will include overnight travel.
  • Assist in special projects as assigned by the Chief Diversity Officer and perform other duties, as assigned.
  • California Applicants: Salaries may vary by location. In Northern and Southern California, the estimated target salary range of this role is $220,000 - $280,000, in addition to bonus eligibility and a comprehensive benefit package. Salary determinations are made based on numerous factors, such as, but not limited to, the relevant market and the skill, experience, class or graduation year, and education of the selected candidate.

Education and/or Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Have a deep knowledge of the programming offered by national and local DEI thought leaders and the goals and objectives of law firm and corporate DEI programming
  • A minimum of six years of prior related programming experience with diversity, equity and inclusion programming, diversity affinity groups, and DEI initiatives
  • A minimum of five years of experience managing people
  • Experience working in a law firm or large corporate environment
  • Experience in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and web-based services and related applications
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and cross-cultural communication
  • Availability to travel about 40% of the time

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree, particularly a J.D.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
