Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose
Under the general direction of the Upward Bound Program Director, the Program Advisor oversees a caseload of 60 participants from the target area high school in Stockton, California. The Program Advisor provides ongoing guidance, support and resources to 9-12th grade participants from low income backgrounds in preparation for them to enter and graduate from college.

This position is grant funded through August 31, 2027, position may be eliminated at any time if grant funds are no longer available.
Essential Functions
  • Assist with recruiting, selection and recommending of participants that meet eligibility requirements.
  • Create programming and curriculum and facilitate/present workshops and other instructional programs.
  • Advise high school students during school visitations regarding academic progress and course selection, personal and academic goal setting, test preparation and registration.
  • Assist with college preparation including SAT/ACT preparation, college and scholarship application assistance and financial aid applications.
  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise program tutors and assistants.
  • Assist with planning of and attend program events, some of which will be outside of the normal workday.
  • Plan and lead college visits each semester (requires some overnight and weekend responsibilities).
  • Monitor student academic performance and maintain appropriate electronic and written documentation in student folders.
  • Assist with data collection for annual performance reports.
  • Collaborate with target school personnel to provide appropriate services to participants.
  • Assist with program communication including website maintenance, social media printed materials and mailings.
  • Ensures compliance with University and federal regulations.
  • Perform other duties as needed to meet the goals of the Upward Bound Program.

This position serves as Campus Security Authority (CSA) as outlined by the Clery Act. CSAs have federally mandated responsibilities to report crimes that are reported them.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in counseling, education, social work or a closely related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience working in an educational setting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree.
  • Experience working with public school personnel and community agencies.
  • Experience working with educationally and economically disadvantaged populations.
  • Knowledge of the college admissions process; financial aid opportunities and high school graduation requirements.
  • Professional writing and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks and adhere to guidelines.
  • Personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those facing project participants.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Frequent standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Occasional lifting up to 40 pounds.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment on campus and offsite in local high school office and at other educational institutions. Work performed during standard business hours. May be required to work some evenings and weekends.

Valid driver's license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range $18.09-$23.96 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
